The village of Viganj is located in the west of the Pelješac peninsula, directly on the Dalmatian Adriatic. The Illyrians, a large Balkan people of ancient times with a strong religious cult, once settled here. In 1336, the small fishing settlement was recorded in the documents of the Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik). In 1671 a Dominican monastery was built in the center of the village as an expression of the economic prosperity of that time.
Viganj is situated on an elongated bay. Tall ships used to anchor here in ancient times. Men and women were both good fishermen and good sailors – and sometimes involved in piracy. The men lived directly on the sea. Their families grew grapes and olives on the slopes above and lived there with their animals.
Viganj is an ideal place for relaxing and eventful vacations. It is situated directly by the sea and at the same time in the middle of a largely untouched environment. On top of the mountain plateau stretches the wilderness of Nakovana, within it the mystical terrain of the Illyrians with its spiritual center. Below, the coastal strip beckons with countless bathing spots.
Lazing or water sports – what would you rather do?
At any rate, on the eastern headland of Viganj Bay, thanks to the reliable wind conditions, one of the most internationally known hotspots for surfing and kite-surfing has established itself.
From Viganj it is only 6 km to Orebić, a nice, small town with good infrastructure. Several times a day passenger and car ferries leave from here to the opposite island Korčula with its picturesque old town of the same name.
In Viganj the clocks go a little slower than elsewhere. You will find grocery stores, bakers, ATMs, restaurants, bistros and wine bars where you can sit for a long time and enjoy the good Dalmatian cuisine – without enervating tourist hustle and bustle.
